A London Wine Cellar

BEFORE:

Because of the high water table under London it is very difficult to ‘dig down' under the house and so most cellars are located under the pavement in front of the house. This inevitably leads to a premium on space and possible damp coming in from the pavement above.

The Owner of this cellar had already ‘tanked out' the shell so the damp problem was overcome – the challenges however were two fold – one of maximising space and two overcoming the pipes and gas meter that were unmovable without enormous upheaval (clearly shown in the pictures) .

The space is split into two half cellars so it was agreed that the finished article should contain racking for immediate drinking in the first cellar and storage for cases in the inner cellar.

The pipes were insulated and boxed off leaving suitable fixings to ensure access if required. The Gas Meter was also boxed off with a small glass window in the door to enable easy reading.

Racking was installed 12 bottles high so that a case could be easily put away; sliding modular racking was installed in the inner cellar so that the wines (largely reds) could be kept in the original case and opened only when ready for drinking. In this way the owner can easily access all his wines for current drinking and I will return regularly to open young wines and monitor progress.

Note the use of a mirror at the end of the cellar to magnify the available space. Also hanging a few pictures makes a world of difference!
